2026 U.S. News Best Graduate Schools Rankings Released
On April 7, local time, U.S. News & World Report released its 2026 rankings of the Best Graduate Schools in the United States.
This year’s rankings cover six major graduate program areas: Medicine, Law, Business, Nursing, Education, and Engineering. Within each broad category, multiple specialized program rankings are included based on specific subfields.
What major changes have occurred in this year’s rankings? Which dark horses have broken through, and which schools remain steady? What about the rankings for new and popular programs?
01 U.S. News Ranking Methodology and Adjustments
U.S. News & World Report’s graduate school rankings are based primarily on the following indicators (weights vary slightly by school):
✅ Peer Assessment: approx. 25%–40%
✅ Placement Outcomes: approx. 20%–35%
✅ Faculty & Research: approx. 20%–30%
✅ Student Selectivity: approx. 10%–20%
✅ Other indicators (resources, alumni, etc.): approx. 5%–10%
Methodology
Each year, U.S. News ranks professional schools and programs in business, education, law, engineering, medicine, and nursing. The rankings for the best graduate schools in these disciplines are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence, and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research, students, and graduate outcomes.
By contrast, graduate rankings in other disciplines—including multiple fields in the sciences, social sciences and humanities, and health—are based solely on peer assessment survey scores.
Changes for the 2026 Edition
The ranking methodology is unchanged from the previous edition, employing the same ranking factors and weights. New rankings for the following graduate programs in the health field have been released: Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Computer Science, Healthcare Management, Nursing—Anesthesia, Nursing—Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Public Affairs, Public Health, Rehabilitation Counseling, Speech-Language Pathology, and Veterinary Medicine.
The Fine Arts master’s rankings have been updated for the first time in six years.
Additionally, doctoral program rankings in these science fields—Biology, Biostatistics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics—have been reissued for the first time in recent years.
