2026 sees a new entrant in the global university rankings arena!

TIME, the American magazine with over a century of history, in collaboration with data analytics firm Statista, has released its inaugural "2026 World's Best Universities" ranking.

As a top-tier global media giant, its entry is likely to further amplify worldwide attention on ranking discussions.

But focusing on the ranking itself, what makes this new list unique? How substantial is its value? Can it gain recognition like the four major rankings—QS, THE, U.S. News, and ARWU? How do universities perform in this ranking?

Ranking Indicators

This ranking is based on three main indicator categories: Academic Excellence & Performance (weight 60%), Innovation & Economic Impact (weight 30%), and Global Engagement (weight 10%). The final score is the weighted sum of these categories.

Academic Excellence & Performance: Focuses on measuring resource input and academic output.

  • Input: Includes per-student expenditure, research income per faculty, student-to-faculty ratio, etc., all adjusted for regional differences.
  • Output: Covers the proportion of highly cited researchers, citation impact of publications (using data such as from Exaly), and the number of alumni and faculty who are Nobel Prize/Fields Medal winners.

Innovation & Economic Impact: Evaluates a university's impact on knowledge transfer, economy, and society.

  • Innovation: Measured through the LexisNexis Patent Asset Index, assessing the quantity and quality of intellectual property.
  • Knowledge Diffusion: Examines the provision of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
  • Economic Impact: Analyzes the proportion of its graduates holding executive positions in major global publicly listed companies, correlated with institutional size.
  • Digital Impact: Measures university website traffic and its proportion of international visits.

Global Engagement: Measures internationalization.

  • Key indicators include the proportion of international undergraduate students, overall proportion of international students, and proportion of international faculty.
  • Also incorporates data on international website traffic for assessment.
